LOS ANGELES — Today, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass endorsed Antonio Villaraigosa in his bid to become the next Governor of California. Surrounded by community leaders in South Los Angeles, she emphasized their shared commitment to social and economic justice and how Villaraigosa's experience makes him the best candidate for Governor of California.

In addition to Mayor Bass, Villaraigosa was joined by Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Los Angeles City Councilmembers Heather Hutt and Curren Price, Jr., and Compton Mayor Emma Sharif, who all endorsed his campaign.

"Since his days as an activist on the eastside of Los Angeles, to his trailblazing work as Speaker of the California Assembly, and his leadership making Los Angeles a global leader tackling climate change, Antonio Villaraigosa will bring that same passion and conviction to stand up to Donald Trump's attacks on our state and deliver needed results to improve the lives of millions of Californians," said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

"With California facing such unprecedented challenges – from our state's housing and affordability crisis, threats to our democracy, and a constant barrage of military-style ICE raids with masked men tearing our families and communities apart – our next governor must be deeply rooted in our California values and possess an unmatched record of action. That's why I am enthusiastically supporting Antonio Villaraigosa for Governor – a leader who can unite our state around our shared values, build coalitions to lift people up for the common good, and ensure that basics like high-quality schools, safe neighborhoods, affordable homes, and good-paying job opportunities are available and accessible for all Californians."

Mayor Bass adds her name to a growing list of mayors and elected officials who have endorsed Villaraigosa, as well as several statewide labor unions. Mayor Bass is the 43rd Mayor of Los Angeles and the first woman elected to lead the city. She represented Los Angeles in the California State Assembly, where she became the first African American woman in the nation to serve as Speaker. She later served more than a decade in Congress, focusing on criminal justice reform, foster youth, and foreign affairs.

"I am honored to have the endorsement of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Mayor Bass is a fierce advocate for working families, children, seniors, and underserved communities and a tireless champion for social and economic justice and for the people of Los Angeles," said Villaraigosa. "I greatly appreciate her support in this campaign and look forward to collaborating with Mayor Bass for the health, safety, and betterment of Angelenos and all Californians."

Antonio Villaraigosa is the former California State Assembly Speaker and 41st Mayor of Los Angeles. As our next Governor, Antonio will bring experience solving challenging problems and getting big things done. Antonio is a proven problem solver and is focused on solutions, investing in what works, and fixing what's broken.
