Antonio: “I’d rather be transformative in four years than mediocre for eight.”
LOS ANGELES — Today, Antonio Villaraigosa announced a clear and unprecedented commitment in the race for governor: Antonio will serve one term and only one term. If elected, Antonio will make way for new leaders and not seek a second term.
“I am committed to only seeking one term for Governor of California. With so much uncertainty in California and across the country, I want to be the leader who gets things done and provides proven leadership,” said Antonio. “I would rather be transformative and successfully lead our state in the next four years, than be mediocre for the next eight. I’m making this pledge for one reason: so every day I serve is about delivering for the people of this state.”

In the past week, the governor's race has been shaken by another scandal. With so much uncertainty in California, nationally, and abroad, we need a steady hand with proven executive leadership. A leader who knows how to take on the tough challenges with a record of delivering real results.
That's why today I'm making a different kind of pledge to you. If elected, I will serve one term and only one term.
As your next governor, I'll tackle California's affordability crisis, and I'll protect our economy and our people from Donald Trump's reckless attacks.
I'm making this pledge for one reason, because every day I serve, every decision I make is about doing the job, not keeping the job or looking for the next one.
And in four years, I'll pass the torch to the next generation.
I know we can do big things in California. Because I've done them before. As leader of the state assembly, I delivered landmark protections for workers, women, and immigrant communities, made record investments in our schools, delivered tax cuts for middle-class families, and expanded health care for millions of children.
As Los Angeles mayor, I cut violent crime by 48%, boosted graduation rates by 60%, and made LA a global leader in greenhouse gas reductions. I've got an unrivaled record of results and a plan to build more housing people can afford, bring down the cost of gas, and fight back against Donald Trump's ice raids and costly tariffs.
That's why labor unions and businesses both are backing my campaign. I'll take on the tough political battles and I'll take on special interests that control Sacramento.
Because as governor, I'd rather be transformative in four years than mediocre for eight. And when I've done what I came to do, I'll leave California stronger, ready for the next generation to carry it forward into a better, brighter future.
