VILLARAIGOSA ANNOUNCES U.S. SENATOR BARBARA BOXER AS FIRST CO-CHAIR

Days After Lieutenant Governor Withdraws from Race, her top California Endorser Boxer is now backing Villaraigosa and Serving as Campaign Co-Chair

LOS ANGELES — The Antonio Villaraigosa for Governor campaign announced that days after Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis withdrew her candidacy in the governor’s race, former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer was named Co-Chair of Villaraigosa’s campaign for Governor of California.

"In the California governor's race, Antonio Villaraigosa has an unmatched record of results. As Mayor, he made Los Angeles a global leader in tackling climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reduced violent crime by 48%, and turned around failing schools with a 60% increase in graduation rates. As leader of the State Assembly, he delivered free healthcare to millions of children, passed the toughest assault weapons ban in the nation, delivered landmark civil rights protections, and made record investments in public schools."

“Antonio Villaraigosa is the right leader at the right time to lead our state as governor, and would make history as the first Latino to be elected Governor of California. With such unprecedented threats to California's future - the housing and affordability crisis, illegal raids by the Trump administration that are tearing families apart, devastating Medi-Cal and healthcare cuts, tariffs that are hurting millions of families and small businesses – we need bold, proven leadership that Antonio Villaraigosa will deliver, safeguarding a future that leaves no Californian behind.”

- Former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, Co-Chair of Villaraigosa for Governor

As Co-Chair, Barbara Boxer adds her name to a growing list of statewide endorsers for Villaraigosa, including the only two statewide union endorsements, District Council of Iron Workers of California and California-Nevada Conference of Operating Engineers, that have endorsed a candidate in the governor’s race with all current candidates in the field. Boxer won election in 1992’s historic Year of the Woman, in which California became the first state in the nation to be represented in the Senate by two women. Senator Boxer was a national leader on environmental protection and a powerful advocate for women’s rights, gun safety, and public health.

“I’m honored to have the support of Barbara Boxer, who was a relentless fighter for California in Washington for 24 years and continues to do so today,” said Villaraigosa. “She knows I am committed to ensuring that all California remains the golden state where all Californians can prosper.”
